Health Care Expert Dr. Danielle Martin has seen the cracks and challenges in our health care system in a way few others have. A family doctor and national media commentator on the health issues that hit closest to home for Canadians, Dr. Martin she’s made it her mission to speak with passion on our national health-care system, defending and defining the ways we can make it even more worthy of our immense national pride.
In a keynote to the Liberal Convention this past weekend in Halifax, Martin shared some of her family history around health care and constructed a captivating talk around big ideas that can make health care better in Canada and beyond. She acknowledges that we have a lot to be proud of in our health care system—especially compared to that of our neighbours to the south, but that we were far from perfect, especially when it comes to universal pharmacare:
“The economics of a system that depends on employer based private insurance are increasing unsustainable. This is an issue that is especially important for women and young people because those people are more likely to be in part time or contract employment. Most of us look upon our system with pride, and we should–it’s a tremendous accomplishment and a tribute to our way of thinking and our way of life. But there’s still a lot of work to do.”
