Best known as the lead singer of the iconic Canadian folk rock band, Great Big Sea, Doyle is a multifaceted singer, songwriter, actor, author, and storyteller extraordinaire. Doyle rose to fame as the frontman of Great Big Sea, whose energetic fusion of traditional Celtic fare and sea shanties earned them international success far beyond the shores of their island home. Their nine albums, double-disc hits retrospective, and two DVD releases have all been declared gold or platinum and have sold over one million copies in Canada. They also racked up 11 Juno Award nominations.
In 2012, Doyle launched his solo career with the release of his album, Boy on Bridge. He has since published three bestselling books, Where I Belong, Newfoundlander in Canada, and All Together Now; appeared in numerous films and television shows as an actor-producer, including CBC’s Republic of Doyle and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood; and released three more full-length solo studio albums including his latest, Welcome Home. He also co-produced the 20-song Ron Hynes tribute album, Sonny Don’t Go Away, and has scored several films including The Shipping News and Young Triffie’s Been Made Away With.
Doyle co-founded the Dollar A Day Foundation in 2016 to help those struggling with mental health and addiction. In 2018, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to the musical traditions of his home province and for his commitment to numerous local charitable initiatives. He is also a member of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
