2017 London School of Business Graduation Speech

Described as a “fresh voice on finance and investment strategies — and much more” by Thinkers50, Alex Edmans is an esteemed professor of finance at the London Business School (LBS). He is an expert in purposeful business, ESGs, behavioural economics, the use and misuse of data, and time management, and is in-demand for his ability to present complex content in an approachable and engaging manner.

Edmans has a unique combination of deep academic rigour and practical business experience. A graduate of Oxford University, he earned his PhD in finance from MIT Sloan as a Fulbright Scholar. Prior to LBS, Edmans worked for Morgan Stanley in investment banking, fixed income sales, and trading, and taught at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as Mercers’ School Memorial Professor of Business at Gresham College, giving a four-year programme of lectures to the public.

As a leading figure in the reform of business to serve wider society, Edmans serves as Non-Executive Director of The Investor Forum, on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Responsible Investing, and on Royal London Asset Management’s Responsible Investment Advisory Committee. The UK government also appointed him (jointly with PwC) to study the alleged misuse of share buybacks and the link between executive pay and investment.

Edmans work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, and World Economic Forum. He has also been interviewed by Bloomberg, BBC, CNBC, CNN, ESPN, Fox, ITV, NPR, Reuters, Sky News, and Sky Sports, and is the author of Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit, which was named a Financial Times Book of the Year. Edmans is also the co-author of the classic textbook Principles of Corporate Finance. His latest book, May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases — and What We Can Do About It will be published in 2024.

A dynamic speaker, Edmans has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, testified in the UK Parliament, and given the TED talk “What to Trust in a Post-Truth World” and the TEDx talks “The Pie Growing Mindset” and “The Social Responsibility of Business”, with a combined 2.8 million views. He has also won 25 teaching awards and been named Professor of the Year by Poets & Quants.

Featured in Thinkers50 Radar, Edmans has been inducted as a Fellow of the Financial Management Association honoured with the Finance for the Future Award for driving change in the finance community.
