Throughout his storied career in healthcare, Lloyd H. Dean has led one of the largest non-profit health systems in the US, counseled and served four Presidential administrations, and co-chaired the most expansive coalition of leaders in support of climate action in the US. An engaging speaker and a nationally recognized business leader, Dean is a sought-after expert on business development, organizational redesign, domestic and international joint ventures, strategic planning, leadership, value creation and delivery, and governance.
Dean is the Chief Executive Emeritus of CommonSpirit Health, which serviced more than 140 hospitals, 1,000 care sites, 25,000 physicians, and 150,000 employees across 21 states. Prior to this, he was president and CEO of Catholic Healthcare West, renamed Dignity Health in 2012, where he oversaw innovative partnerships that helped create more positive patient experiences, efficient care, and healthier communities. This approach led to the creation of CommonSpirit Health, where he served as CEO from 2019-2022.
Considered a transformational health care leader, Dean has dedicated his career to eliminating health disparities. He has led several insightful and ground-breaking social programs and partnerships to address anti-violence, housing, human trafficking, and climate action, all of which disproportionately affect systematically excluded communities. He has also forged one-of-a kind educational partnerships with Morehouse School of Medicine, Creighton University, Charles Drew University, and Baylor School of Medicine to help shape the future of health care by recruiting, training, and graduating a more diverse health care workforce.
As a trusted advisor to four of the last Presidential Administrations, Dead was instrumental in the creation of the Affordable Care Act. He also collaborated with nationwide health systems to partner with the Trump Administration and Biden Administration to promote and implement COVID-19 vaccinations. Dean has also served on several federal and state committees charged with the economic development of California and was co-chair of the California Future HealthWorkforce Commission.
In addition, Dean co-chaired America Is All In, the most expansive coalition of leaders in support of climate action in the US. He is currently the co-chair of Advance San Francisco and serves on the board of directors for Cal Poly Foundation, Carnegie Hall, CommonSpirit Health Foundation, Golden ArrowMerger Corp., Guidehouse, and McDonald’s Corporation.
Dean is renowned for his expertise in management and operational excellence. His vast speaking engagements include the World Economic Forum, Bloomberg television, the CleanMed Conference, The Aspen Institute, and the UN Climate Change Conference.
Dean holds degrees in sociology and education from Western Michigan University. He also holds an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of San Francisco and two honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Morehouse School of Medicine and from the Board of Trustees of California State University and California Polytechnic State University.
