Having been recognized with multiple UN awards for her humanitarian work and named the first National Volunteer for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau’s life’s purpose is mental health advocacy; a subject explored in depth in her new memoir, Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other.
Available today, Closer Together shares Sophie’s deeply personal journey towards self-knowledge, acceptance, and empowerment, laying down a roadmap to help readers do the same. She begins by exploring in-depth her own life and experiences — including her struggle with an eating disorder in her teens and early adulthood — drawing parallels back to the larger issues of mental health, trauma, relationships, and more.
In an interview with Elle Canada, Sophie said: “I want to connect, and I want to give [away some] of myself as well. So, for me this is not just a book — it’s a connector and [something] I want people to feel welcomed into.”
Closer Together also delves into the science behind brain health and how our bodies and brains work. Sophie enriches her book with insight from world-renowned experts. She conducted exclusive interviews with bestselling author and renowned addictions expert Dr. Gabor Maté; development psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld’ award-winning journalist specializing in politics, gender issues, and reproductive rights Liz Plank; Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General Mary Simon; and many more.
Throughout her book, Sophie demonstrates how we can all better ourselves through honesty, understanding and self-awareness, sharing scientific advances and research surrounding mental health. In her interview with Elle Canada, Sophie says that she sees the book as an extension of herself and life journey. It’s her “next chapter”.
“I’m a forever student,” Sophie said. “I’ll never stop [doing the work]. This is what I need to do, and I know it. It hurts — it’s a journey. I’ve had many, many tears on my yoga mat [in the process]. But that’s okay.”
