Jagmeet Singh is a trailblazing force in Canadian politics who, as the former leader of Canada’s National Democratic Party (NDP), negotiated landmark agreements that delivered the country’s first national dental care program and universal pharmacare framework — historic wins that now serve millions of Canadians. With nearly 15 years at the frontlines of politics, Singh shares the servant leadership principles and coalition-building strategies that helped him bridge divides, build high-performing teams, and drive transformative change in an era of deepening polarization.

Born to Punjabi immigrant parents, Singh learned early on the values of hard work, fairness, and collective responsibility. It was this foundation that shaped his career. Before entering politics, Singh earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Western University and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Osgoode Hall Law School. As a practicing lawyer, he defended the Charter rights of his clients and frequently represented individuals facing barriers to justice, demonstrating an early commitment to equity and human rights.

Singh entered public service in 2011, when he was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Bramalea-Gore-Malton in Ontario. During his tenure, he served as Deputy Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, advocating for fairness, accessibility, and social justice.

In 2017, Singh made history as the first person from a visible minority background to lead a major federal political party in Canada, becoming leader of the NDP. Under his leadership, the NDP negotiated a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA) with the governing Liberal Party, securing transformative policy achievements. This included the Canadian Dental Care Plan and the passage of the Canada Pharmacare Act, which established the foundation for universal medication coverage.

After leading the NDP through several federal elections, Singh stepped down from politics in 2025. He remains widely respected for his compassion, integrity, and dedication to building a Canada where no one is left behind.
