General Wayne Eyre (Ret’d) is a distinguished Canadian military leader who served a highly eventful and consequential 40 years in the Canadian Armed Forces. Asked to serve as the Chief of the Defence Staff in a period of intense crises, he guided Canada’s military through an era he describes as a “turning point in history,” marked by unprecedented global and domestic challenges. He now speaks on the pressing issues facing Canada — from the global polycrisis to Arctic sovereignty — and the leadership required to navigate them.

Eyre’s military journey began at age 12 as an Army Cadet and spanned decades of command at every level. He led operational units from platoon to division level and commanded the Canadian Army. Internationally, he served in the US as the deputy commander for operations with the XVIII Airborne Corps, and in Korea as the first non-American deputy commander of United Nations Command in its 68-year history and the most senior Canadian officer ever permanently stationed in the Asia-Pacific region.

Operationally, Eyre commanded on deployments to hotspots around the world, including Cyprus, Croatia (the Battle of Medak Pocket), Bosnia, Afghanistan (twice), and Korea. These experiences shaped his deep expertise in strategy, leadership, resilience, and multinational cooperation.

Eyre served as the Chief of the Defence Staff for three and a half years, a period of compounding crises — from floods, fires, and a pandemic at home, to wars in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, to increased threats in the Arctic and Asia-Pacific. His service has been recognized with numerous honours including the Commander of the Order of Military Merit, the Meritorious Service Cross, and high-level orders and decorations from six other countries.

Since retiring in 2024, Eyre has dedicated himself to writing, teaching, advising, and speaking. With three master’s degrees, he is a Senior Fellow and Visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and is currently writing his memoir to be published in Fall 2026.
