Keeping it Human: How to Lead with Humanity in the Age of AI

Keeping it Human: How to Lead with Humanity in the Age of AI

AI isn’t slowing down — and neither is the pressure on leaders to keep up. But as organizations race to adopt new technology, a quieter, more urgent question is emerging: how do we keep the workplace human in the age of AI?

To help answer that, we reached out to some of today’s most sought-after keynote speakers — experts in leadership, communication, human connection, and the future of work — and asked them all the same question: how do you lead better and keep people at the centre as AI reshapes the way we work?

What came back was a compelling mix of practical advice and fresh perspectives. From embracing the friction AI can’t replicate, to anchoring teams in purpose, to using AI to finally design organizations around people — here’s what they had to say.

Unlock the Human Advantage

Dwayne Matthews Headshot June 2023

Future Strategist | Innovation Evangelist

In 2022, we hit an inflection point with AI that made cognitive intelligence more and more abundant. Now in 2026 we find ourselves in a world where the machines are here and evolving quickly. But in a strange twist of fate, the AI Revolution is actually a human revolution in disguise.

If AI is a commodity, the differentiator will be human. Many organizations are rushing to replace people to offset the cost of compute but they’re quickly learning that their business success isn’t written down anywhere. It’s buried in the unwritten IP of their people: the person who accelerates the group without a title, the one whose lived experience defies written logic, the junior hire who injects new energy and perspective.

We cannot out-machine the machine at machine things. So the real work now is unlocking what was always there. Three places to start:

  1. Orientation: Help your people regain their bearings in a world of exponential information overload.
  2. Cognitive Sovereignty: Get very clear on what deserves your attention and what doesn’t.
  3. Unlock Stranded Brilliance: Use AI to create cognitive surplus, then use that surplus to free the capabilities your people haven’t had the capacity to express.

Design Work Around People, Not Process

WEB HEADSHOT - SHAWN KANUNGO - 2025

Shawn Kanungo

Strategy in a World of Disruption

The real opportunity with AI is to make work MORE human.

For the first time in human history, software can be personalized to the individual. Imagine you’re a salesperson who loves chatting and connecting with clients but hates the backend work. We got an AI agent that does that.

Imagine you’re an engineer who loves getting into the details but can’t visualize your ideas. We got an AI agent that does that.

Imagine you’re an accountant who loves the decision-making and the gray areas, but hates the monthly close, the financial reports, the reconciliations, the journal entries. We got an AI agent that does that.

AI is letting us lean into our gifts and our strengths. We have never been able to do this in human history. It’s about amplifying the unique gifts of every individual. We are FINALLY designing the organization around PEOPLE, not just process and technology.

And here’s what happens when you do that. You get high-agency people. These are people who don’t wait for permission. People who become the architects of their own outcomes. Because when you’re doing the work you were meant to do, you become more high agency.

A globally recognized innovation strategist, Shawn Kanungo is one of the world’s most sought-after voices on innovation and generative AI. He provides audiences with an optimistic roadmap for the future; one that embraces unexpected approaches to innovation to remain competitive and relevant.

Reconnect People to What Matters Most

Hamza Khan

Hamza Khan

Future of Work and People-First Leadership Expert | Bestselling Author

In an era increasingly defined by intelligent machines, leadership remains the profoundly human act of helping people move toward the future with clarity, conviction, and — most importantly — one another.

Across the organizations I advise, I encounter a common pattern. Well-intentioned leaders are preoccupied with growth, transformation, technological integration, operational efficiency, and long-term competitiveness. Meanwhile, the people they serve are often seeking something far more fundamental: confidence in tomorrow, trust in one another, stability amid uncertainty, and a sense that their work contributes to something meaningful. The resulting tension is frequently interpreted as resistance to change. But it is more often a symptom of insufficient alignment.

The most effective leaders I know continuously reconnect people to five foundational anchors: Vision, Mission, Values, Principles, and Purpose. Vision articulates the future they are striving to create. Mission clarifies the work that must be done. Values shape the culture they aspire to cultivate. Principles guide daily decisions and behaviours. Purpose reminds everyone whose lives are improved when the organization succeeds.

In many ways, this is the work of real wisdom. Artificial intelligence can help organizations optimize, automate, and accelerate. Wisdom helps people discern what is worth pursuing in the first place.

My advice on how to keep it human and lead better in the age of AI is remarkably simple: continuously ask every single person in your organization whether they understand these five anchors and whether they feel confident in the direction the organization is heading. The answers will reveal more about the health of your culture than any engagement survey, productivity metric, or AI dashboard.

Embrace Super Human Leadership

Dr. Bailey Parnell Headshot 2026

Dr. Bailey Parnell

Globally Renowned Pioneer in Digital Well-Being | Expert in AI and Human-Centered Leadership

AI is always a mirror first, and then it amplifies the reflection. Some people turn it into a weapon, but in my experience, most people are good, contrary to what you see in a news scroll. When good people use AI with good intention, it goes beyond a mirror and becomes a prism that refracts their human light greater than ever before. They use it for caring and connecting.

There are things AI does better than us, which can be useful. And there are also things we want humans to do even more of: judgement, taste, accountability, relationships, trust-building, and so on. To make room for humans to do this, we need to embrace Super Human Leadership: high human depth combined with high AI integration.

Without the human, we get an Automated Robot — efficient, but lacking connection to others, and full of risk. Without AI, we increasingly see Exhausted Heroes — extending themselves to the max in a rapidly changing and tiring world. But with both, we get a Super Human Leader — someone collaborating with AI to augment what AI does well, while staying connected to people, present in every output as the human-throughout-the-loop, and who finally has time for lunch again.

We stay human by leaning into our humanity and making room for it to reemerge with AI. Do this and we can all become super human.

Dr. Bailey Parnell is a pioneer at the intersection of technology, AI, leadership, and well-being. Grounded in research, she shares science-backed strategies to help leaders and teams learn to harness AI ethically, better navigate change, and build thriving workplace cultures.

Lead into Friction

Riaz Meghji Headshot

Riaz Meghji

Human Connection Expert | Author of Every Conversation Counts

When I came across recent research from SAP SuccessFactors revealing 30% of employees would prefer having an AI agent listen when they’re stressed or frustrated instead of turning to a human colleague, I wasn’t surprised.

Why? Because AI never interrupts, rarely disagrees and doesn’t make things awkward. It makes you feel like the most interesting person in the world. Yet embracing the friction we instinctively avoid is where growth, trust, and real connection happen.

Leading better in the age of AI is about doing what the LLMs can’t: staying in hard conversations, challenging ideas, letting disagreement sharpen your team.

Friction isn’t a flaw in human relationships; it’s a key feature. So lead toward the awkward. Ask the harder question. Those are the conversations your teams will remember and learn from.

The bestselling author of Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection That Build Extraordinary Relationships, Riaz Meghji is a human connection who shows audiences how to create engaged and connected cultures through the power of candid conversation.

Make People Feel Valued, Face to Face

Mark Bowden

Mark Bowden

Expert in Communication, Body Language, and Human Behavior

I’m no Luddite. I count myself as an early adopter of technology, helping clients develop AI avatars and body language-reading robots. This tech isn’t replacing people but creating a bigger opportunity for leadership in the ireal-life, real-time, face-to-face interactions you can now have more of.

The live gathering, without the risk of a deceptive digital veil, is now the most trusted — or indeed, only trusted — source of information and community in high-stakes, high-end situations. That is why the most successful leading organizations are doubling down on training their people in how to deliver the highest quality of their human presence, i.e., to stand out, win trust, and gain credibility every time they communicate.

Organizations wanting the competitive edge are training and enabling their people to show up and perform at their best. In a world of digital slop and uncanny and canny fakes, putting a drink in a real person’s hand and talking face-to-face is the new premium experience that smart money is competing to win in. We value the help most when we can shake hands, ask the burning question, and see the answer spoken in real time.

Ultimately, live interaction answers an important business question: How valued am I? Did they invest in a skilled communicator and real human authority to look you in the eye and help, or did they have their cheap-out subscription to Johnny Robot fob you off?

Mark Bowden is a world-renowned thought leader in body language and communication. Through his unique GesturePlane system of nonverbal communication, he equips people with the most influential and persuasive techniques to help them stand out, win trust, and gain credibility every time they speak.
