Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe Shares Practical Strategies to Build Resiliency in New Book

Resiliency expert Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe maps out a kinder approach to fostering everyday resiliency in her new book, Calm Within the Storm. She shares practical strategies grounded in research to help readers learn how to navigate uncertainty in their lives and feel confident when taking on challenges.

Robyne is a multi-award-winning psychology and education instructor who specializes in resiliency, navigating stress and change, and personal wellness. In Calm Within the Storm, she fights against the misguided modern conception of resiliency as “being tougher”, and instead shows how trust and safety are the foundation for authentic growth, acceptance, and change.

Robyne’s work is inspired by personal experience. Her childhood was plagued with mental health challenges, which fractured her sense of self-worth. At 16 years old, she was in a car accident that landed her in the middle of the frozen Otonabee River and could have easily been the end of her story. But she persisted and survived. Her mother always said, “Robyne can do hard things,” and that day she learned to her very core, that she could.

It was this belief that carried Robyne through her journey to creating a healthier self. No longer did she let the negative voice inside her hold her back. She still wrestled with negative thoughts through the years, but she learned to recognize those patterns and re-train her brain to be one of self-compassion, strength, and a commitment to keep working.

It is this lesson that Robyne wishes to share with the world — that they too can do hard things. In her new book, Robyne draws on her personal experience, as well as global research and case studies, to present a new, attainable model for everyday resiliency. It helps readers to identify the obstacles that keep them stuck, and learn how to move past them through enacting their resiliency.

Robyne recently wrapped up her virtual book tour, which included a special one-on-one conversation with innovation strategist Shawn Kanungo. She speaks to how the pandemic served as inspiration to her book, because she wanted to help people learn how to “be okay” in the present, instead of waiting for the world around them to get better.
