Building Grit and Resiliency
In today’s disruptive, fast-paced world, grit and resiliency have become the currencies of modern success. So, how can we nurture these critical resources in ourselves, our organizations, and our teams?
Meet some of our leading speakers who help audiences build and unleash their natural resiliency by providing practical strategies grounded in research and experience, and illustrating them through engaging storytelling.
Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe is a multi-award-winning psychology instructor who specializes in resiliency, navigating stress and change, and personal wellness in the workplace. Described as transformational, engaging, and thought-provoking, Robyne’s keynotes provide practical strategies grounded in global research and case studies that help foster resiliency within ourselves and others.
In addition to teaching, Robyne is currently the senior educational developer for the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Trent University, where she focuses on providing professional development for the teaching community and cultivating student engagement.
Robyne’s talk on resiliency is motivating and informative with humour and personal experiences shared throughout to keep the audience engaged. Robyne has a way of taking complex information and delivering it in a way that makes sense and has both work and life applications.

Robyne was able to speak to fortitude and resilience from the head and heart. Her style and presentation were adapted well to the audience. My 12-year-old granddaughter was fascinated and proclaimed it the best part, while co-workers are still discussing what they learned.

An award-winning coach, educator, and leader, Dr. Ivan Joseph has spent his career leading cultural transformation, helping people believe in themselves, and creating cohesive teams. Ivan speaks about self-confidence, embracing the “grit” to persevere in spite of setbacks, and leading teams to success, drawing from the lessons he’s learned from a life in sport.
While serving as a professor and soccer coach at Graceland University, he developed the soccer program from the ground up, leading both the men’s and women’s teams to a #1 national ranking, and the men’s team to win the first-ever national championship in Graceland’s history — in just five years.
Ivan then spent a decade as director of athletics at Ryerson University in Toronto, leading the transformation of the athletic department to national prominence as the Ryerson Rams won the first-ever provincial and national championships in the institution’s history under his leadership.
Ivan is currently the vice-provost, student affairs at Dalhousie University, where he leads the university’s effort to promote interconnectedness and belonging among a diverse student body drawn from across the country and around the globe.
Dr. Joseph was very well received by a tough group. I was thankful the delegates had an opportunity to hear his message, they were thrilled and made a point to say so! They commented that Dr. Joseph was credible, charismatic, and relevant.

We had a lot of positive feedback regarding Dr. Joseph’s talk here at Samsung. The crowd enjoyed his talk and really appreciated his insight.
An acclaimed explorer, travel writer, and television host (with a degree in engineering physics), Bruce Kirkby uses his incredible adventures across the globe to provide real-world, practical lessons on risk management, change leadership, and resiliency.
Bruce’s travels have taken him from the tip of the highest mountain to the centre of the driest desert, from rafting Ethiopia’s Blue Nile Gorge to sea kayaking Borneo’s northern coast. He draws on these experiences to offer simple strategies to help people confront their fears and learn how to embrace change and growth to see lasting success, both personally and professionally.
Unbelievable! We knew Bruce would be good, but not that good! His presentation was the perfect kickoff to our National Business Conference. Everyone in the management group was thrilled.
Rarely do we host a speaker as engaging as Bruce. His self-effacing humour only adds to his tales of incredible adventure to completely captivate an audience. We hung with hushed anticipation on Bruce’s every word, and we were hungry for more when our time with him ran out. We’ve been swamped with requests for a return engagement!
