Dr. Helen Papagiannis: What Comes After What’s Next? AI+ and the New Rules of Human Experience

Dr. Helen Papagiannis: What Comes After What’s Next? AI+ and the New Rules of Human Experience

The future isn’t apps. It’s not even screens. It’s reality itself.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is going beyond decision making to actively constructing the worlds we inhabit. “Reality Modding”, a term I coined, is the idea that AI, combined with frontier technologies like augmented reality and spatial computing, is fundamentally remodding and reshaping the environments we live, work, and shop in.

So, when people ask me, “What’s next for AI?”, I encourage them to ask a more important question: “What comes after what’s next?”

Beyond the Screen: Welcome to AI+

AI is no longer confined to desktops or apps. What I call “AI+” is the fusion of artificial intelligence with immersive, spatial, and ambient technologies creating a world where intelligence lives in our environments, not just on our devices.

Picture this — you walk into a store and your personal AI shopping assistant materializes beside you. You previewed select items with your avatar the night before, virtually trying on outfits while playing a fully sensorial game in your favourite brand’s 3D story world. Now you’re here to “shop in person”, something that’s become nostalgic as life has become ever more digital.

Your AI guides you through curated recommendations, narrates the hidden stories behind the items, and subtly adjusts the lighting and sound based on your mood. The physical and digital blend into a seamless, responsive experience. There are no buttons, no clicks; only immersion and a world designed around your desires.

This is the age of AI-curated realities, where every environment becomes a dynamic, data-responsive layer tailored in real-time. It’s not science fiction. The building blocks are already here with next-gen devices like Apple Vision Pro, Snap Spectacles, and Meta’s highly fashionable AI glasses. Digital twin AI shopping experiences like Doji create a hyper realistic avatar who is perfectly styled with the latest fashion, and immersive interactive full body brand worlds like Chanel’s “Le Bal de Paris”, is an haute couture dance experience in virtual reality that’s like stepping into a dream. Participants said they never wanted to leave!

Can You Tell What’s Real Anymore?

Spoiler: most people can’t, and that changes everything.

With the rise of AI-generated visuals, sounds, and even humans, the boundaries between synthetic and physical are evaporating. In a popular game we play on stage at my keynotes, most people can no longer reliably distinguish between real and AI-generated content. This is a cognitive shift in humanity.

That’s why Reality Modding is so urgent. Merely consuming content is a thing of the past; we’re now navigating constructed realities. Leaders must ask: “What reality am I offering? Who is designing it? What values does it embody?” And as I say in my keynotes, “If you’re not designing the reality your customers want, someone else will.”

Three Shifts Every Leader Needs to Understand

Three essential transformations shaping the next frontier of business and the human experience are:

1. AI-Curated Realities

From fashion to finance, brands are evolving from storytellers to reality designers. Immersive commerce is moving beyond personalization to contextual transformation. Mood-responsive retail, AI-generated pop-up environments, and augmented showrooms (like Porsche’s recent spatial computing shopping experience on Apple Vision Pro) are already emerging. Brands that mod the world will win.

2. The Evolving Complex Relationship Between Humans and Machines

As machines become more emotionally intelligent and spatially aware, the lines are drastically blurring between user, collaborator, and even friend. In fact, we’re seeing a fascinating shift from technical to emotional applications of AI with the #1 use case for conversational AI in 2025 being therapy and companionship. Personal support and human betterment surpassed things like content creation and editing by almost double.

Conversational AI today is the gateway to humanoids. Robots and wearables give AI physical form and this rise in emotional connection with AI is pointing to a future where we will have this technology more pervasively embedded in our homes, on our bodies, and ultimately changing us and what it means to be human. A premium will be placed on authentic bespoke realities.

3. An AI+ Strategy Because AI Alone is Not Enough

Businesses need an AI+ strategy, one that integrates spatial computing, ambient intelligence, augmented reality, and ethical human-centered design.

Think of it this way: once powering shopping and topic recommendations on a screen, AI is now becoming the invisible architecture of the world around us. From the layout of a store that reconfigures based on real-time behaviour, to personalized digital twins that walk ahead of the customer journey, AI+ turns data into dimensional, living spaces that emotionally resonate. It’s the new design language for leaders shaping the world to come.

Retail’s Reality Remix: Designing for the Augmented Human

According to a report from High Snobiety and Boston Consulting Group, the #1 reason a luxury consumer follows a brand is to live the universe it creates. In my Paris keynote on the Future of Luxury, AI and XR, I shared how Louis Vuitton, one of my clients, is a master at Reality Modding seamlessly blending art, fashion, and technology to create a dynamic, participatory universe. Customers are invited to not only experience the brand but also engage with it on a sensory level.

Sensory engagement plays a crucial role in this evolution as Reality Modding goes beyond what we see to activating touch, sound, smell, and even taste to forge a deeper emotional connection with the brand. By engaging all of the senses, Reality Modding elevates a brand from a passive product to a living, breathing experience that constantly evolves and invites personalization.

The goal isn’t just to sell products, but to choreograph immersive experiences that feel alive, personal, and unforgettable. Retail is fertile ground for Reality Modding. Innovative retailers are transforming the store itself into media. A space that can shape-shift, respond, and feel.

Reality is becoming programmable. The organizations that thrive won’t be those who adopt the latest tools, they’ll be the ones who build experiences grounded in human desire, imagination, and powered by converging technologies.

The next big platform is the world around us.
