Planning events and being detail oriented have always come naturally to Senior Client Executive, Donna Carreiro. Having worked on our team for a number of years as an event coordinator and as a client service executive, she carefully considers our clients’ needs and to goes the extra mile to ensure they are happy. We’re thrilled to put Donna in our staff spotlight today:
Did you always want to work in the speaking industry? If not, what other careers did you consider?
Yes and No. I worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry for eight years and really enjoyed the service side of things. I’ve always wanted to be involved in the meeting and events industry in some aspect, and the opportunity to work at Speakers’ Spotlight was my foot in the door. I’ve now been with the team for almost nine years and have been so fortunate to grow within the company, that I feel like I’ve found my place in the industry.
Any advice for people getting started in the industry?
Never underestimate your role and how it contributes to the overall success of an event. It takes a village and there is always an opportunity to learn. Attend events whenever you can and be active within the industry. To steal a quote from Richard Branson:“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later!”
Do you have any great stories from events you’ve attended featuring Speakers’ Spotlight speakers?
The first Speakers’ Spotlight Showcase I attended, James Cunningham performed. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life! It was amazing! You know those real belly laughs that just take you over. I had tears rolling down my face and thought “I could listen to this guy all day.” I love a good laugh!! Early on at Speakers’ Spotlight, I also attended an event with JP Pawliw-Fry and was just enthralled by his message both personally and professionally. It was then that I realized the impact of one speech. That was years ago and I still reflect back on his words to this day.
What is your favourite thing about working with our speakers?
They’re just so wonderful to connect with and always have amazing stories to share. Having access to their philosophies, thoughts, and knowledge and the ability to pick at their brains is a pretty good perk!
With clients?
I enjoy learning about their company and how I can best support them in meeting and exceeding their goals and objectives for their events. With each and every event, you get to know more and more about them and over the years with continued collaboration, you turn into a well-oiled machine, anticipating their needs before they even have to ask.
Best subject in school?
Math…although I can’t for the life of me remember how to come up with the probability of getting a four of hearts from a deck of cards.
Desert island album?
Anything by The Dave Mathews Band. I’d survive on the island forever!
Last film you saw?
Disney’s Frozen, and I suspect there are many who can sympathize. The last movie I saw out of my own free will was 22 Jump Street!
Last book you read?
The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin.
What speakers from times gone by would you have loved to hear speak?
Steve Jobs.
