Jesse Marsch came to Canada with the goal to help evolve the sport of soccer across the nation. With Canada’s historic win against South Africa on June 28 — their first-ever World Cup knockout round match win and the country’s most-watched non-final World Cup knockout match ever according to Bell Media — it looks like he’s done just that.
“I felt strongly that I could, through my personality and through the football that I believe in, help continue to evolve the sport in [Canada] to become bigger and to become something that people would really want to be a part of,” Marsch said in a USA Today article. “That’s turned out to be way more true and possible than I’d ever dreamed.”
The Road to Canada
Prior to coaching, Jesse played professional soccer for 14 seasons. He participated in a total of 321 league matches and won three MLS Cup championships with DC United, Chicago Fire, and Chivas USA. A Wisconsin native, he also earned two caps for the US national soccer team.
Jesse’s coaching career has spanned the world’s most competitive leagues. He has led top-tier European clubs including Leeds United in the English Premier League, RB Leipzig in Germany, and FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. His European run followed North American success, where he was the inaugural coach of the Montreal Impact and later head coach of the New York Red Bulls, which won two MLS Supporters’ Shields during his tenure.
Since taking over as head coach of the Canada men’s national soccer team in 2024, Jesse has guided the program to unprecedented heights — a program-record FIFA world ranking, a fourth-place finish at Canada’s first-ever Copa América, and the inaugural 2025 Canadian Shield, an invitational tournament with New Zealand, Ukraine, and Côte d’Ivoire. He’s also taken to his adopted home like it’s his own, telling ESPN, “The ideals and character of the Canadian people fit me very well. It’s a country that is kind and caring to outsiders. It’s a country that appreciates the things you do more than the things you say.
A Rocky Start, A Redemptive Finish
Canada’s road to the knockout round wasn’t a smooth one. In the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament opener, a 78th-minute equalizer was needed just to tie with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a loss to Switzerland dropped Canada to second in Group B. This meant instead of having their next game in Vancouver, team Canada had to face South Africa in California.
That home country advantage wasn’t needed though as in the 92nd minute of the South Africa game, midfielder Stephen Eustáquio pounced on a poorly cleared header and buried it in the bottom corner, giving Canada the win.
“We were disappointed not to play at home, but the guys quickly refocused and stayed focused on the opponent. It took 92 minutes to do it, but we did it,” Jesse said in an ESPN article.
After the big win, Jesse immediately gathered his team on the field and could be heard shouting over the still-cheering crowd, “You should be so proud of who you are. You should be so proud of this game. You never lost belief. You went after it, point after point, moment after moment. You are Canadian heroes.”
What Comes Next
This historic win sends Canada into the Round of 16 against Morocco on July 4 in Houston — a rematch of the 2022 World Cup, when the Atlas Lions eliminated Canada on their way to the semifinals. Morocco got here by knocking out the Netherlands and remains unbeaten this tournament. Canada, ranked 30th in the world, will be the underdog, but whatever happens, Jesse has already rewritten Canadian soccer history, not only for the nation but for the players themselves who can’t get enough of his signature enthusiasm and “all gas, no-brakes attitude”.
“He’s one of a kind in that,” said defender Alistair Johnston in a USA Today article. “He can be a little over the top, but look, we love it. We feed off of it. He gets us going.”
