Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle Stars in Tell Tale Harbour at Mirvish

Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle Stars in Tell Tale Harbour at Mirvish

After a record-breaking world premiere at the 2022 Charlottetown Festival and again in 2025, Alan Doyle‘s heartwarming musical comedy, Tell Tale Harbour, is making its mainland debut. Mirvish is hosting it for a limited run at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre from September 23 to November 2, 2025.

Alan, of course, is best known as the beloved lead singer of the iconic Canadian folk rock band, Great Big Sea. A multifaceted singer, songwriter, actor, author, and storyteller extraordinaire, he has now added musical theatre to his repertoire. Alan is both the star and co-writer of Tell Tale Harbour, alongside Bob Foster, the musical director for the hit show, Come From Away.

“It was a new experience for me, an incredible one,” Alan said of taking the leap to writing and performing musical theatre in a Globe and Mail article. “I’ve said this so many times over the years: When people ask me to do something, the reason I say yes is usually because I don’t already know how. I want to learn.”

A Maritime Tale of Community and Heart

Based on the 2013 film The Grand Seduction, Tell Tale Harbour tells the story of a struggling but proud small town in Atlantic Canada eager to keep its community together. With the sudden closing of their precious fish plant, this once bountiful village is looking for a miracle. When an opportunity arises to secure a state-of-the-art frozen french fry factory — and the many jobs it would create — the entire community is galvanized into action.

There’s just one major obstacle — to secure the factory, the harbour must have a full-time resident doctor. Realizing this might be their last chance to save their beloved home, the townspeople come together to spin the truth and put on a show to charm an interim doctor into moving there permanently.

Packed with original songs and lots of laughs, Mirvish describes this musical comedy “as relatable as it is ridiculous, as hilarious as it is heartfelt.” It celebrates the people, the trials, and the triumphs of living in a small town on the edge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

Alan Doyle: Heart and Soul of the Production

Alan stars as Frank, a charismatic character who plays a central role in the town’s efforts to convince the good doctor to stay. “I jumped at the opportunity to do this,” Alan said. “As we were writing it, I fell in love with the idea of playing Frank, and I thought that was crazy at the time. But after a year of writing song after song, I got up the gumption to ask my collaborators if they thought it was a crazy idea, and they said, ‘We’ve been hoping you’d ask us that for a while.’”

Alan began working on the show with collaborators Adam Brazier, Bob Foster, and Edward Riche during the pandemic. His inherent connection to Atlantic Canada added a layer of authenticity, Foster said in an article with The Toronto Star.

“I could come up with a jig and it would sort of sound like a British guy who’s been living in Canada writing a jig, rather than someone who grew up with that stuff,” he continued. “Alan was very quick to know when something was authentic or not.”

Critics have praised Alan’s performance, with Canadian comedian and actor Mark Critch saying, “This is as good of a night in the theatre as you’re possibly going to get… It’s a show that makes you feel like you’re home,” and Tom Power, host of CBC’s Q with Tom Power, saying, “It’s a profound, beautiful, genuine, authentic performance.”

Showcasing the Full Creative Vision in 2025

Originally premiering in 2022 at the Charlottetown Festival, Tell Tale Harbour became the top-selling show in the event’s 60-year history. The updated 2025 show features expanded storytelling with new characters, additional songs, and reimagined sets.

Alan is looking forward to the Toronto premiere, saying “I’m nervous about it, but in the best way. We’ve just worked so hard on it for so long that we hope people like it all the time.” And we’re looking forward to catching him on stage and watching his continued evolution as an artist.

“The story we’re telling and the words people say are very similar to what we originally wrote,” Alan said to the Globe and Mail. “But everything else is different: The world these people walk around in, and the set, and the lighting. The costumes are different, the exits and entrances and choreography are different. Because of the pandemic, we had 100 ideas for the musical but only got to do about 55 of them. Now, I’d say we’re doing about 98 of them.”
