John Ralston Saul

Award-Winning Essayist and Novelist

Declared a “prophet” by Time magazine, John Ralston Saul is a leading thinker and visionary—known for his astute commentaries on wide-ranging topics, such as civilization, citizenship, human rights, globalization, economics, warfare, and society. A stimulating and provoking speaker, an award-winning essayist and bestselling novelist, and a highly decorated Canadian, he examines where we have been, where we are, and where we are headed.

Saul is celebrated for his many bestselling and award-winning books, which include an essay trilogy (Voltaire’s Bastards, The Doubter’s Companion, and The Unconscious Civilization), as well as Reflections of a Siamese Twin, On Equilibrium, The Collapse of Globalism, A Fair Country, and his double-biography Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin. His novels include The Birds of Prey, The Next Best Thing, and The Paradise Eater.

A coveted speaker, Saul has delivered esteemed talks around the world. He acted as the Massey Lecturer;  gave the Harold Innis Lecture, the inaugural LaFontaine–Baldwin Lecture, the J.D. Young Memorial Lecture, and the Ideas Lecture; and he has also spoken at the Sydney Opera House.

Saul’s involvement with organizations includes acting as the co-chair of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, which encourages new Canadians to become citizens; and as the patron and former president of the Canadian Centre of PEN International. He is a Companion in the Order of Canada, and he holds 17 honorary degrees—ranging from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, to Herzen University in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
