As the assistant coach of the Montreal Canadiens, Kirk Muller’s extensive knowledge and experience of professional hockey have played a large part in shaping one of Canada’s most beloved hockey teams. After a 19-year NHL career, the leadership skills and wisdom that Muller gained as a player have helped to transform him into a successful coach and exceptional team leader.

After a short, yet outstanding showing in the OHL, Muller was drafted second overall by the New Jersey Devils in 1984 and earned 54 points in his rookie year. At the age of 18, he played for the Canadian Olympic Hockey team during the Sarajevo Games in 1984, suiting up for all six games and scoring two goals.

Following almost a decade of playing in New Jersey, Muller was traded to Montreal in 1991. As the assistant captain of the Canadiens, Muller helped his team achieve a Stanley Cup victory in 1993. Following this winning season, Muller was traded to the New York Islanders, and then to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the ’96-’97 season, he went to play for the Florida Panthers, and was traded again to the Dallas Stars in 1999.

In 2003, after enduring 19 NHL seasons between six teams, totaling 357 goals, 959 points, and 1349 career games, Muller retired. Unable to give up the game altogether, he began his coaching career in the '05/ '06 Season with the Queen's University Golden Gaels.

Following a great season with the Gaels, Muller accepted the position as the Assistant Coach with the Montreal Canadiens and in November, 2011 Muller was named Head Coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.
