Peter Kent
Journalist, Late-Life Politician & Self-Deprecating Commentator
Peter Kent became an important journalistic voice early in his career and has stayed there for four decades. As federal environment minister, his stance on Alberta's "ethical" oil sands is causing a stir. A gifted communicator who both informs and entertains, Peter provides his unique perspective on Canada's role in our changing world. Each presentation is specifically researched and tailored, to address issues of most interest to each audience.
For four decades Peter Kent covered the "big" stories across Canada and around the World -- from Expo '67 and Trudeaumania to the wars in Cambodia and Vietnam. He has been a crucial player in the coverage of the Yom Kippur War, the fall of Idi Amin, Zimbabwe independence, the Ethiopian famine, Iran's Islamic revolution, the Soviet Army's retreat from Afghanistan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Intifadas and the evolution of international terrorism.
After his 40 years working on public policy as a journalist, Kent came out as a partisan politician in 2005. In 2008, he was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for the constituency of Thornhill, Ontario.
Peter Kent was appointed as Environment Minister in early in 2011 and is already making big waves on Parliament Hill with his campaign to brighten the Alberta oil sands’ reputation in the face of harsh criticism from environmental groups.
Kent was the first journalist to anchor CBC's The National and was a founding producer/correspondent/host of The Journal. He served as senior European correspondent for NBC News in the final years of the Cold War.
A member of Canada's Broadcast Hall of Fame, Kent is a former director of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the outgoing president of the Canadian War Correspondents Association, and the recipient of countless journalistic awards in Canada and abroad. A four-time Emmy nominee, he also received the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award, and in 2006, he was honoured with the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) "President's Award".
He is an active supporter of a number of local, national and international charities and organizations, and is a mentor with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council.
A gifted communicator, Peter Kent informs, entertains, and enlightens.
