For over twenty years former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov has been the highest-rated chess player in the world. He is widely considered the greatest chess player that ever lived, and has achieved many milestones throughout his career. As a child prodigy he became a chess grandmaster at the age of 17, and the youngest World Chess Champion at the age of 22. From 1981 – 1991 Kasparov won every major match in which he participated, creating a reputation of invincibility. His face-off against IBM's Deep Blue computer brought worldwide attention to the game of chess. Kasparov remains the only icon in a game of over 100 million players.
Kasparov announced his retirement from professional chess in 2005 to devote time to his writing, and to become a full-time member of the Russian political opposition movement.
