Hana Gartner
Award-Winning CBC Journalist
One of Canada's top journalists, Hana Gartner has enjoyed a distinguished career at CBC Television for over 35 years. Her straightforward style and willingness to ask the tough questions have earned her the respect of the journalistic community and numerous awards. Gartner's presentations combine her unique insights, with a warmth, humour and compassion, which enable her audience to connect with her on a deeper level. She is also an outstanding host, moderator, or master of ceremonies.
Concordia University gave her an honours degree. The Public Broadcaster gave her an education.
For over three decades Hana Gartner travelled the country and the world on behalf of the CBC, delving into the hearts and minds of people from every walk of life, telling their stories.
Gartner has confronted everyone, from Prime Ministers to contract killers, investigated everything from polygamy to airport security, taking on the corrupt and the inept, exploring and exposing that which makes us human and inhumane.
Her straightforward style and willingness to ask the tough questions have earned her the respect of the journalistic community, and numerous awards for interviewing and writing. Hana has accumulated a shelf full of Geminis, and a bunch of American Gracies, plus two Gordon Sinclair Awards for excellence in Broadcast Journalism, from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. Her most meaningful prize was the one presented in July 2011 by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. It was the prestigious Michener Award.
The award was for meritorious public service journalism, in recognition of CBC, the 5TH Estate's investigation into The Correctional Service of Canada and the death of 19 year old mentally ill inmate Ashley Smith, who strangled herself while Correctional Officers watched outside her segregation cell.
Connecting with an individual, communicating with an audience, and making a difference is Hana's definition of success.

As we began the process of organizing our event we got to a point where we had to make a decision about who was going to be our Key Note Speaker. In retrospect, our decision to have Hana Gartner as our Key Note was one of our better decisions. The theme for our event was a controversial one; nonetheless it is a subject that needs much attention and gets very little, much like the story of Ashley Smith told by Hana Gartner as part of her Key Note presentation.
She has eased the burden on our management team for future events; when it comes to making that "tough decision", we want Hana. We all loved her and want her to come back soon.
