Farah Perelmuter
After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1991, and completing an intensive marketing program at the Institute of Communications and Advertising, Farah, CEO & CO-FOUNDER of SPEAKERS' SPOTLIGHT started her career in the advertising industry. In 1995, she took a deep breath and a major plunge into the biggest risk of her life. Yes, she married Martin Perelmuter (but was pretty sure that would work out), and together, they quit their jobs and started their own business, Speakers’ Spotlight. The adventure began.
Due to the fabulous team at Speakers’ Spotlight, the business has grown beyond Farah’s expectations. Today, they have offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. The agency has been selected by Profit Magazine as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in Canada and is listed in PROFIT 100, Canada's authoritative ranking of high-growth companies. Profit Magazine has also ranked Farah as one of Canada's Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs for the last seven consecutive years. She is listed in Canada’s Who’s Who and has been nominated for various awards including ‘A Woman Who Makes A Difference’ by Toronto Life Fashion, Business Development Bank of Canada's ‘Young Entrepreneur Award’, the "Top Forty Under Forty" Award, the PCMA ‘Spirit Award’ and Chatelaine Magazine nominated her for the ‘Rotman Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award’. In 2008, Farah was selected as one of "Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100" through the Women's Executive Network. For the 2nd consecutive year, Farah and Martin Perelmuter have been named finalists for the Ernst & Young ‘Entrepreneur Of The Year Award’. In 2009 The Women’s Post named Farah one of Canada’s Top 20 Women of the Year.
Farah and Martin believe that as entrepreneurs, they have an obligation not only to their clients, speakers, employees and suppliers, but also to the communities in which they work and live, as well as the developing world. They have helped countless charities since their first year in business. For the last 3 consecutive years, The International Association of Speakers Bureaus' awarded Speakers’ Spotlight with the ‘Community Service Award’ for their incredible contribution to helping children around the world. Speakers’ Spotlight has also partnered with Free the Children and adopted a village in the Masai Mara region of rural Kenya, where many children live in extreme poverty and their families face significant life challenges. Through the annual Speakers’ Spotlight Showcases, they have been able to raise enough money to build a schoolhouse, pay a teacher's wages, buy all the textbooks needed for the school, furnish the school, and build a well to provide much needed clean water to the community. Most recently they raised enough money to purchase a lunch program to feed their students for nearly two years. This will provide incentive to parents to send their children to school. Aside from the funds raised, Speakers’ Spotlight also send “their kids” over $200,000.00 worth of medical supplies. In 2008, Speakers’ Spotlight partnered Kiva.org, the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to an entrepreneur in the developing world. To date, over 2,500 entrepreneurs around the world have been helped by Speakers’ Spotlight. Most recently, Speakers' Spotlight partnered with Pathways to Education Canada, a charitable organization created to reduce poverty and its effects by lowering the high school dropout rate and increasing access to post-secondary education among disadvantaged youth in Canada. Together they created the Speakers' Spotlight Scholarship Fund to help students graduate from high school, and enable them to continue their post-secondary education. And this is just the beginning...
Farah has been featured numerous times in media worldwide, and has twice been featured on the covers of national magazines. Her opinions have been quoted in various business books including in the first Canadian edition of Contemporary Business Communication, a college and university textbook published by Houghton Mifflin Company. She is on the board of the Upper Canada Chapter of YPO (Young Presidents Association.
Farah enjoys running the business with Martin, but for this couple, the most rewarding time is spent being Mommy and Daddy to their children, Jade and Cole.
