Dr. Michael Evans is a practicing family doctor and associate professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto. He is internationally renowned for innovation in engaging the public about health. Examples include the viral YouTube video "23 and 1/2 hours", his national CBC radio show, and founding a "Mini-Med School" for the public at the U of T. He is currently directing Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and partnering with YouTube on a series for the public.

Dr. Michael Evans received his BA in English Literature from McGill University in 1985 and his MD from McMaster University in 1993. He is a family physician and is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto. He is a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital.

Known internationally for innovation in how we engage and educate patients, Dr Evans created "23 and 1/2 hours: What is the single most important thing you can do for your health." This was mounted on YouTube in Dec 2011 and has over 2 million views; outpacing any other evidence-based YouTube health messaging in history.

Dr. Evans's current focus is using designed media to better inform Canadians about health. He is founding director of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital. The lab fuses diverse skill sets that range from film-makers and marketers to designers and media experts and combining them with clinicians, researchers and patients. The lab incubates, prototypes, and tests health media that ranges from peer-to-peer digital storytelling to illustrated movies to medication hockey cards to 5 minute med schools. Many of these resources are being injected into the process of care at the newly launched fifth family practice unit at St. Michael's where Dr. Evans has an inner city practice and teaches residents.

Dr. Evans also engages the public through his work with the common media whether through his "Evidence-Based Radio" show on CBC radio's Fresh Air, his column in the Globe & Mail, or other media.

Dr Evans work in engaging the public has been profiled on The National, Canada AM, the ReCivilization series on CBC, and the top selling business book MacroWikiniomics this year. CTV profiled him as a "Canadian Original" in 2012. His recently published kids book, the Adventures of Medical Man, was chosen as one the 2011 top non-fiction health book for kids by the Canadian Children's Book News.

Dr. Evans holds many past and current positions regarding knowledge translation to front line clinicians, consumers, and policy makers. He is a founding director of the Centre for Effective Practice, was Scientific Officer for Knowledge Translation and Exchange at the Canadian Institute for Health Research, was a member of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee and Vice-Chair of the Canadian Optimal Medication and Utilization Service. Dr. Evans is Chief Editor of the Mosby Family Practice Sourcebook, the bestselling textbook for front-line clinicians in Canada. He is Chair of Patient Education for the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Evans was founder of the renowned Mini-Med School at the University of Toronto, a medical school for the public that puts the public together with the University's best medical professors.

Dr. Evans has won many awards including a "Webby" for being chief editor of the best governmental site in the world (back when there wasn't much competition) and the Healthy U of T award for positive impact by a faculty member on the health of Toronto, and the 2012 award for Creative Professional Activity in Family Medicine. He is often asked to speak on the intersection between patient engagement, innovation, and best practice.
