Dr. Will Cupchik is an internationally recognized authority in the area of atypical theft behaviour, including that perpetrated by one’s company’s usually honest, law-abiding and best customers and employees. As a practicing Registered Psychologist for over thirty years, Dr. Cupchik was formerly the Psychologist-in-Charge, Forensic Outpatient Psychological Services at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto. He is currently the head of the Cupchik Centre for Assessment And Treatment of Atypical Theft Offenders, in Toronto.
Dr. Cupchik is the author of the book, Why Honest People Shoplift Or Commit Other Acts Of Theft, which has been a consistent best seller in its field, and he was the principal author of the original, groundbreaking peer-reviewed article, "Shoplifting: An Occasional Crime Of The Moral Majority," published in 1983.
Many U.S., Canadian and European Union media outlets have quoted and highlighted Dr. Cupchik's clinical work. He has been quoted in a great many publications, including The New York Times, LA Times, The Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle and The Globe and Mail, as well as People, Health and Redbook magazines. He has also appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including CBS's Early Morning Show, ABC's Good Morning America, MSNBC Investigates, Bloomberg Radio News, and BBC Radio, as well as all major Canadian television networks.
Dr. Cupchik has presented to professional, retail and lay groups over the past three decades on a variety of topics. In recent years he has focused his presentations towards helping business people, professionals and laypersons develop a better understanding of the reasons behind the wide variety of theft offences committed by usually responsible, often financially well off, and sometimes even high profile persons (some politicians, police officers, prominent lawyers and wealthy business owners), and how to better deal with those who commit these offenses. He has also presented to managers and senior staff of various business, legal, service and educational institutions on improving employee effectiveness and client satisfaction.
Dr. Cupchik's wide variety of working experiences over the past decades, first as a professional electrical engineer, and then as a high school teacher and counselor, psychotherapist, researcher, university lecturer, writer and publisher, and registered psychologist, have informed his use of a variety of presentation modalities to render the points he makes easily understandable and - often – quite unforgettable. His talks are inevitably offered with warmth, down-to-earth examples, and more than a dash of humour.
1. Why Usually Honest People Steal And How To Deal With Them
Dr. Cupchik has presented on this topic on a great many occasions – at professional conferences here and in the USA, including: (i) the American College Of Forensic Examiners at their Annual Conference in San Diego; (ii) professional and business groups such as the Retail Council of Canada's Loss Prevention Group – Toronto Section and (iii) to lay persons, such as the Ulysessian Society.
Dr. Cupchik believes that many retailers' loss prevention, sales management and other personnel would profit from my talk in this area, especially as a pervasive misunderstanding of the variety of theft offenders on occasion can – and has – led to a financial waste of company resources, lawsuits having been filed, and unavoidable tragedies such as the deaths/suicides of shoplifters. None of these occurrences can be good for business!2. Games People In Organizations Play And How To Identify And Stop Them
Psychological game playing is often pervasive in organizations. Learning to recognize, deal with, and preferably avoid these games (that are usually carried out without the conscious awareness of those who get involved in them) can vastly improve the corporate atmosphere, the psychological well-being of those who otherwise get entrapped in them, their customer relationships and the organization's financial bottom line.
Dr. Cupchik has assisted corporate board members, CEOs and Executive Directors, managers and line personnel to improve their business and personal communications and lower their stress levels, all the while improving their organizations' functioning.3. Effective Stress Management And Improved Heart Health For Managers And Senior Executives
Using more than a dash of humour and real-life examples, this presentation informs the audience about key matters that can dangerously increase psychological stress, including chronic 'time urgency', and several ways to counter these same factors by employing techniques that take just a few minutes a day. Using a variety of exercises that can be done at their seats, members of the audience will have an opportunity to sample the observable effects of even very brief stress managing interventions.
By improving self-awareness of their state of stress, attendees are encouraged to empower themselves in the service of doing stress-reducing techniques that are not only beneficial for their own health, but that may positively influence their coworkers as well, thereby increasing their workplace atmosphere and effectiveness.
