Chris Braiden

Leading Change & Organizational Transformation Expert

Thirty-two years as a copper and now a coach. Throughout his career, Chris Braiden served in all aspects of operational and administrative work at every rank from Police Officer to Superintendent. Having successfully managed and implemented change in that most change-resistant of organizations – a large, metropolitan police force, his presentations are as much practical as they are inspiring. They are also infused with the wit, humour and passion of a born storyteller.

Before creating his own consulting company, Chris Braiden was a superintendent with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS). But getting into policing wasn’t easy for Braiden. Before making it in Edmonton, he was rejected in three countries!; Ireland where he grew up, because he wasn’t fluent in the Irish language, England because he has a finger missing (cut it off in a sawmill in Ireland when he was 16!), and initially in Edmonton because he’s color-blind! He finally got his start in a town attached to Edmonton, which was later annexed by Edmonton that had to take in all town workers – including Braiden!

While with the EPS, Braiden was seconded to the federal government for two years as Special Advisor on Policing and also declined the police chief’s job in Calgary. In his later years with the EPS, he wrote and implemented a ‘Process for Change’ plan that revolutionized policing in North America. That work gutted and rebuilt the conventional ideological police structure and culture that was more driven by Police Wants at the expense of Public Needs! Braiden describes his work as structure and culture “Garage Sales!” To date, his ‘Process for Change’ plan has been reviewed by 72 organizations worldwide.

Since his retirement, Braiden has travelled throughout the continent and to countries abroad including Japan, France, Ireland, Sweden, Australia, Thailand and China – advising police commissions, provincial and state governments, associations and corporations on the key elements for transforming a culture toward a more productive and healthier organizational environment.

Braiden infuses his presentations with the wit, humour and passion of a storyteller combined with a genuine visionary insight into organizational change.
