Spotlight On: Scott Stratten, Expert in Un-Marketing

For generations, marketing has been hypocritical. We’ve been taught to market in ways we hate being marketed to―so why do we still keep trying the same stale marketing moves? Scott Stratten, an expert in viral, social, and authentic marketing shows audiences–using real life, practical examples–how to unlearn the old ways and consistently attract, engage, and hold on to the right customers. Scott is the author of UnMarketing: Stop Marketing, Start Engaging and The Book Of Business Awesome: How Engaging Your Customers and Employees Can Make Your Business Thrive. He was kind enough to take the time to answer our Speakers’ Spotlight questionnaire:

What inspired you to want to be a speaker?

Seeing Les Brown on a PBS telethon when I was a kid–I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Any advice for aspiring speakers?

People hire experts who speak, not just speakers. Build your platform of opinion and you’ll get asked to be on the stage platform.

What do you like to leave audiences with?

A tear running down their cheek from laughing and an annoying buzz in their brain that has them thinking.

How do you prepare before a talk? Any special rituals? A good luck talisman?

None at all, except to make sure I’ve gone to the bathroom. Everything else is secondary.

Do you have an especially memorable event you can tell us about?

I recently spoke in front of 8,000 people (thanks, Speakers’ Spotlight!), and I felt like Aerosmith. Maybe in their earlier/smaller crowd days. But a rock star for sure.

Any funny or embarrassing situations you found yourself in as a speaker?

I’ve pretty much had everything happen: bulb goes, emergency bathroom, nearly fainting, hecklers. The hecklers were at a speaking association event, and that one still hurts my brain.

Is there a charitable cause that you feel passionate about? Why?

No Kid Hungry from Strength.org. Child hunger is everyone’s issue, and we all need to do our part. I’m on their social committee, and I ran their first Tweetathon, with all the money raised  going to them.

If you had to choose a new career, what would it be?

Game show host, preferably for Let’s Make A Deal, strictly for the contestant costumes.

Desert island album?

Motley Crue, Dr Feelgood

Best subject in school?

Phys Ed

Last book you read?

Flim-Flam!, by James Randi

Last film you saw?

Wolverine, with my son. Awesome.

Celebrity crush?

Louis CK
